A Suspicious and Unprecedented Visit: Faiq Zidan to Damascus to Meet al-jolani

A Suspicious and Unprecedented Visit: Faiq Zidan to Damascus to Meet al-jolani

Baghdad

Informed sources report that Faiq Zidan, President of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, is set to travel to the Syrian capital, Damascus, at the head of a high-level judicial delegation.

The visit would reportedly be the first of its kind by an Iraqi official of this rank since the major political transformations in Syria. Zidan is expected to meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa (Al-Jolani) and Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais.

The timing is particularly questionable and politically sensitive, coming amid rapidly unfolding regional judicial and political developments.

Among the most notable developments are the reported death sentences issued in Damascus against Bashar al-Assad and two members of his family, coinciding with the adoption of Lebanon’s General Amnesty Law in Beirut—following the controversial legislative engineering previously witnessed in the Iraqi parliament.

These developments raise questions about whether prisons, detainees, judicial settlements and regional political arrangements are now becoming interconnected, unfolding simultaneously in a manner that could serve the rising Saudi regional agenda.

Why is the head of Iraq’s highest judicial authority visiting Damascus at this particular moment?

What is the real agenda behind the meeting with Al-Jolani?

Is this merely a judicial visit—or part of a broader regional political and security arrangement?
