A Year of Blood and Boasts: Israel’s Pager Massacre—and a World Bowed in Silence

A Year of Blood and Boasts: Israel’s Pager Massacre—and a World Bowed in Silence

Exactly one year ago, on September 17–18, 2024, a covert operation swept through Lebanon: thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies exploded simultaneously across multiple regions, killing dozens and injuring thousands. Today, one year later, we commemorate not only the blood that was spilled, but also the arrogance that followed.

The victims—civilians, medics, passersby—are still piecing their lives back together. Hospitals in Beirut’s southern suburbs, the Bekaa Valley, and beyond were overwhelmed. The number of wounded ranged between 2,700 and 3,000+, and the dead no fewer than 30 to 40, depending on the count. Severed limbs. Burned faces. Shattered lives. And what did the world do? A seminar on “moral balance.” Prepackaged statements. Nothing more.

And yet, no clearer proof exists that this massacre was neither an accident nor a “mistake” than what came afterward. In February 2025, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented former U.S. President Donald Trump with a golden pager. It was mounted on a wooden base, accompanied by a plaque inscribed: “To President Donald J. Trump, our greatest friend and greatest ally. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

The golden pager itself bore the engraving: “Press with both hands”—a phrase many believe was a chilling reminder of how the deadly devices exploded in the victims’ hands as they tried to read incoming messages. Trump reportedly replied: “That was a great operation.”

It is worth noting that these gestures, along with many similar ones especially during the recent war, followed by official U.S. visits to Tel Aviv and the celebratory reception Netanyahu received in Washington, confirm that the relationship between the two sides is not a routine alliance but a fully integrated partnership—sharing roles from planning and execution to funding and arming. For this reason, they must be seen as a single front in hostility, not as two separate entities.

And it did not stop there. Just days ago, Netanyahu stood before a U.S. congressional delegation in West Jerusalem, saying:

“Do you have cell phones? Do you have cell phones here? No. You’re holding a piece of Israel right there.” He then continued: “A lot of the cell phones, the medicines, the food—do you eat cherry tomatoes? Do you know where those were made?”

He meant to highlight Israel’s role in global technology and consumer products (phones, medicines, food). But his tone—defiant, dismissive of criticism, bordering on mockery—raises the question: is this mere boasting, or a threat disguised as pride?

What This Means—and Why It Matters

🫶These “symbols” are not symbols at all. They are messages. To Hezbollah. To Lebanon. To anyone who dares to question Israel. The golden pager is a trophy. The speech is a claim over the global supply chain. A reminder that technology, commerce, and consumer goods—things assumed to be neutral—can be wielded as instruments of domination.

🫶So where is the moral high ground, the international norms we are supposed to rely on? On paper, the Fourth Geneva Convention, international humanitarian law, and countless condemnations call for distinction, proportionality, and civilian protection. In reality: declarations without accountability. The ICC is silent. Powerful states look away. And the United Nations? Paralyzed.

What Must Be Done Public record and truth-telling: Establish the facts through transparent, credible investigations. Reconcile conflicting casualty numbers and responsibility. Pressure and sanctions: All states claiming to defend human rights must impose targeted sanctions on those who planned and authorized these operations—not only political leaders but also military and intelligence chiefs. Diplomatic isolation: Gifts like golden pagers and arrogant speeches are open declarations. They must have consequences—in diplomatic channels and in public opinion.

Legal accountability: Launch investigations by the ICC or other international courts.

War crimes charges must become prosecutions, not just words on paper. Solidarity with: Provide tangible reparations—medical care, prosthetics, long-term psychological support, compensation for families—and ensure they are not forgotten.

On September 17–18, 2024, Israel turned communication devices into instruments of terror. A year later, the response was not justice, but bravado. A year later, the world seems more eager to applaud “successful operations” than to enforce the laws meant to protect human life.

Netanyahu’s golden pager. His defiant speech. These are not the acts of a state confident in its innocence. They are the acts of a state confident in its impunity. Until the international community stops treating such symbols as curiosities, we will be living in a world where massacres can be celebrated—or mocked—without consequence.
