A powerful explosion rocked the Kriyat area of northern Baghdad, inside a Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) facility east of the canal. Thick plumes of smoke rose into the sky, triggering panic among nearby residents.
The PMF Commission announced that the explosion occurred in a stockpile of old and damaged ammunition, confirming that no casualties had been reported so far.
What do we know about the incident?
▪️ Local sources reported that the force of the explosion shattered windows in nearby homes and shops.
▪️ The PMF has not disclosed the type or quantity of ammunition stored at the facility, nor has it identified the direct cause of the explosion.
▪️ The possibility of an external strike remains open but has not been substantiated. So far, there is no reliable evidence confirming an airstrike or drone attack.
However, reports also claim that US military aircraft were flying over the Iraqi capital around the time of the explosion. These reports remain unverified, and no connection to the blast has been established.
Security and Political Assessment:
Given the history of attacks targeting PMF positions, the possibility of an external strike should not be dismissed before a thorough forensic investigation is completed.
But the more pressing question is whether the Iraqi government will transparently disclose what actually happened, or whether the incident will be quietly buried without clear answers.
Iraqi sovereignty demands the protection of the country’s security forces, particularly the Popular Mobilization Forces, and a serious investigation into any potential attack, free from foreign pressure and interference.
Only a credible investigation can determine whether this explosion was an accidental detonation or a deliberate hostile act.
