But let’s be Clear About unifil’s Limitations

UNIFIL cannot substitute for Lebanese sovereignty.

It cannot impose a military solution.

And it cannot prevent Israel from using overwhelming force if the political system behind the mandate refuses to confront violations.

Its influence is therefore primarily documentary, diplomatic and political—not coercive.

That distinction matters.

The mission’s reports can provide evidence. They can support Lebanese diplomacy. They can preserve an international record.

But reports alone do not stop bombs.

The Real Battle Over Unifil

The therefore much bigger than whether the mission should simply be renewed.

It is about whether southern Lebanon will retain an international presence capable of observing, documenting and reporting what happens on the ground.

Washington and Israel may argue that UNIFIL has failed to achieve its objectives.

But there is an uncomfortable question they should answer:

If the mission is so irrelevant, why is its presence—and especially its documentation—such a political problem?

The future of UNIFIL may ultimately determine whether the next phase in southern Lebanon unfolds under international observation—or in an information vacuum.

And in war, who controls the battlefield matters.

But increasingly, so does who is left behind to tell the world what happened there.

Tehran Dismisses the “60-day Ceasefire”: “There is Nothing to Extend”

Iran is pushing back hard against the narrative that a 60-day ceasefire is approaching its expiration.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei says the premise itself is wrong.

According to Baghaei, there was never a formal “60-day ceasefire.” Rather, there was supposed to be a 60-day cessation of hostilities during which Iran and the United States would work toward an agreement.

That arrangement could have been extended—but only if Washington had honored its commitments.

According to Tehran, it did not.

baghaei’s Argument is Blunt:

The U.S. failed to comply with the terms of the memorandum of understanding.

No serious negotiations ever began.

Therefore, there is no agreement to extend.

The entire notion of a

“60-day ceasefire”

is, in Tehran’s view,

“void and irrelevant.”

The Political Message Matters

This is more than a semantic dispute over the word ceasefire.

Tehran is effectively rejecting any attempt by Washington to frame the current situation as a temporary truce that simply expires on a predetermined date.

Iran’s position is that Washington failed the conditions that were supposed to make the cessation of hostilities meaningful in the first place.

And that changes the diplomatic equation.

If there is no valid ceasefire to extend, then there is no automatic return to the negotiating table simply because a calendar deadline arrives.

The Bottom Line

Washington may be counting down the days.

Tehran is questioning whether there was ever a legitimate countdown to begin with.

The clock means little when one side says the agreement itself was never honored.
