Days at Sea: the Human Cost of america’s War with Iran

Days at Sea: the Human Cost of america’s War with Iran

The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) has left the CENTCOM area and begun its journey back to San Diego after an extraordinary 272 consecutive days at sea without a single port call — reportedly the longest such stretch for a U.S. carrier in the modern era.

The deployment was originally scheduled to end in May but was repeatedly extended amid the U.S. war against Iran. By the time the carrier reaches California, the deployment could approach 300 days.

The prolonged deployment was accompanied by mounting reports of severe crew conditions, including:

Mold and broken toilets

Weeks without hot water

Lost mail

Reduced food portions

Multiple reported incidents involving sailors going overboard

One confirmed incident occurred on August 3, when a crew member entered the water and was recovered about an hour later.

Congressional Democrats have called for an investigation, while the Navy says it has not identified an increase in suicidal ideation or attempts. President Trump dismissed concerns over the deployment, arguing it was

“not nearly long enough.”

Meanwhile, the USS George Washington (CVN-73) has arrived in the Persian Sea to relieve the Lincoln in what the Navy describes as a planned rotation.

The broader picture: Nearly 300 days of continuous deployment exposes the enormous human and operational costs of sustaining U.S. naval power during a prolonged confrontation with Iran.
