Do you know why the Bürgenstock resort was chosen for the US-Iran negotiations?

By Dr. Bassam Abu Abdullah
When negotiations take place between the United States and Iran, the choice of venue is not merely a protocol detail. In the world of diplomacy, places carry messages no less important than words. Therefore, the choice of the Swiss Bürgenstock resort was not a coincidence, but a decision combining geography, politics, and symbolism all at once.
First - Bürgenstock is located almost in the heart of Switzerland, within the canton of Nidwalden, on a mountain ridge rising about 874 meters above sea level. It directly overlooks Lake Lucerne, one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe. The resort is only about 15 kilometers from the city of Lucerne, and less than an hour from Zurich. Anyone standing on its terraces feels as if they are suspended between sky and water, where the Alpine peaks meet the lake in an almost legendary scene. Its limited access routes—whether via the mountain road, boats, or the funicular—are an additional reason making it an ideal venue for sensitive conferences and negotiations.
Second - But geography is only part of the story. The resort also carries the symbolism of the host nation, Switzerland, whose name has been associated for decades with neutrality, mediation, and conflict resolution. Therefore, meeting on Swiss soil gives the conflicting parties a sense of dialogue in a neutral space that belongs to neither.
Third - As for the surprise that many may not know, the resort is not entirely Swiss-owned. Since 2007, Qatari entities began investing in the project, before its ownership practically transferred to the Qatari company "Diarr," and then to Katara Hospitality, the hospitality arm of the Qatar Investment Authority (Qatar's sovereign wealth fund). Qatar spent approximately one billion dollars to completely rebuild the resort during a project that lasted about nine years, before opening it in its current form in 2017, and then officially inaugurating it in 2018.
Fourth - Here emerges a striking political significance. Over the past years, the State of Qatar has played the role of mediator between Washington and Tehran in several complex files, maintaining open channels of communication with both sides. Therefore, holding negotiations at a resort owned by a Qatari entity adds another symbolic dimension: the mediating state is present in the scene, even if it is not sitting at the table itself.
Fifth - As for the resort itself, it resembles a small town of luxury hospitality. It extends over more than a full kilometer along the mountain edge and includes four luxury hotels that together contain about 383 rooms and suites, in addition to 67 independent residential suites, 12 restaurants and cafes, a medical center, and a mountain spa covering about 10,000 square meters, as well as conference halls and multiple sports and recreational facilities.
Sixth - Perhaps what adds extra charm to the place is that for many decades it was a destination for celebrities, businessmen, and royal families. Hollywood stars and the world's ultra-wealthy frequented it. In 1954, it witnessed the marriage of the international actress Audrey Hepburn to actor Mel Ferrer in the small chapel located inside it. Today, it remains one of the most attractive resorts for global political and economic elites, alongside luxury tourism lovers from Europe, the Gulf, and Asia.
Seventh -** These US-Iran negotiations were not the first political event witnessed by the resort. In 2002, it hosted the "Bürgenstock Agreement," which contributed to consolidating the ceasefire in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. In 2004, it hosted the final round of negotiations for the UN plan to unify Cyprus, known as the Annan Plan. As for June 2024, it hosted the peace summit on Ukraine with the participation of dozens of countries and international organizations.
Therefore, the name Bürgenstock has gradually become linked to negotiation tracks and international settlement making.
For all these reasons, choosing Bürgenstock was not just choosing a luxury resort overlooking a beautiful lake. It is a choice that combines the neutrality of Switzerland, the memory of a place associated with peace-making, and the indirect presence of mediation. In the world of international politics, the venue of a meeting can be part of its substance, and geography may carry no less important than what is said inside negotiation halls. Places, like words, are chosen with care.
