Eyal Zamir Meets His Greek Counterpart Amid Tensions with Turkey

Occupied Palestine

Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir held official talks in occupied Palestine with Dimitrios Houpis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.

The visit comes at an extremely critical juncture, amid heightened tensions and regional escalation following the Israeli airstrike that targeted Abu al-Duhur Airbase in Syria.

Significance of the Greek Presence at This Timing for Turkey:

For Turkey, Greece represents a “soft underbelly” and its most prominent historical and strategic rival in the Mediterranean. The two countries remain at odds over maritime borders, airspace, gas exploration rights, and the Cyprus issue.

The meeting appears to carry a strategic signaling dimension, potentially allowing Israel to demonstrate its ability to activate its regional alliance network—particularly Greece—to pressure Ankara or constrain its movements in the Syrian and Mediterranean arenas should tensions escalate.

In such a scenario, any potential confrontation would not necessarily remain confined to a bilateral framework.
