Germany is Building a long-range Strike Arsenal — and Calling IT “Deterrence”

Germany is reportedly preparing to spend nearly €12 billion on a new generation of long-range conventional weapons designed primarily to strengthen its military posture against Russia, according to POLITICO.

The planned four-stage program would give the Bundeswehr the ability to strike targets hundreds — and eventually thousands — of kilometres behind enemy lines, including command centers, airfields, missile launchers and logistics hubs.

The first phase could begin as early as 2027, focusing on cheaper, mass-producible cruise missiles. Reported candidates include Ukraine’s FP-5 Flamingo, BARS, and Covenant Industries’ Anthem.

Later phases reportedly include U.S. Tomahawk missiles and Typhon launchers, followed by jointly developed Anglo-German systems, including stealth cruise missiles and a hypersonic glide weapon capable of exceeding 2,000 km in range.

Berlin describes the concept as the ability to strike

“far into the rear area of an adversary”

while keeping any response conventional and

“below the nuclear threshold.”

But there is an obvious contradiction here.

Germany presents this buildup as defensive deterrence, yet it is simultaneously investing in the capability to conduct deep strikes far beyond the battlefield.

That is not simply the language of territorial defense. It is the construction of a long-range offensive strike capability — one that could fundamentally alter Germany’s military role in Europe.

And there is a broader question Berlin should answer:

Does adding thousands of kilometres of strike range make Europe safer — or does it create another escalation ladder in an already dangerously militarized confrontation with Russia?

Germany’s post-war military restraint was built precisely around the dangers of turning Europe into a launchpad for major-power confrontation.

Now Berlin appears determined to reverse that logic.

Deterrence can prevent war — but an arms race disguised as deterrence can also make war more likely.
