Iran Breaks Its Silence and Addresses the Case of 3 Pilots Detained in Qatar for Six Months

Tehran

Iranian military authorities have officially announced that three of its military pilots are being detained in Qatar, following months of ambiguity and secrecy surrounding their fate.

According to Brigadier General Baqerzadeh, head of the Missing Persons Search Committee of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, three Iranian pilots were captured alive by Qatari forces after their Su-24 fighter jets crashed during attacks that took place late last winter.

Baqerzadeh stated that the pilots — Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Bahroushian — have been held in Qatari custody for six months, amid what he described as the Qatari government’s refusal to allow them any communication, family visits, or meetings with official bodies handling their case.

At the conclusion of his statement, the Iranian military official stressed the need for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to act urgently, in accordance with the Third Geneva Convention, to visit the Iranian pilots in Qatar, assess their health, and work toward establishing conditions for their release.

A significant strategic shift

The announcement represents a potentially significant shift, as Qatar’s continued refusal to acknowledge the detention of the pilots — reportedly amid security pressures linked to the US military presence — has resulted in indirect mediation channels reaching an impasse after six months of deadlock.

The pilots have reportedly been treated by the parties involved as sensitive bargaining assets connected to the consequences of those attacks, under close oversight from US Central Command (CENTCOM).

This has apparently prompted Tehran to change its approach — moving from quiet, behind-the-scenes diplomacy to overt public pressure, including publicly identifying the officers by name.

By internationalizing the issue, invoking the Third Geneva Convention, and calling for immediate Red Cross intervention, Tehran seeks to place legal and humanitarian pressure on Doha and Washington, break the six-month silence, and secure consular and medical access to the detained pilots.
