Iran Grants Iraqi Oil Tankers Special Passage Through the Strait of Hormuz
New development: Iran has authorized a number of Iraqi oil tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz following repeated requests from Baghdad through multiple diplomatic channels, according to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.
Securing a special passage for Iraqi tankers was one of Baghdad’s main requests during the visit to Iraq by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, at a time when maritime traffic through the strait remains at critically low levels.
Strategic significance:
Iraq relies heavily on maritime export routes through the Gulf, while continued restrictions on navigation through Hormuz have put pressure on its oil exports. According to recent data, only 7 commercial vessels transited the strait on Thursday, with no large crude oil tankers or LNG carriers among them.
Therefore, the special authorization for Iraqi tankers does not mean that the Strait of Hormuz has returned to normal operations. Rather, it indicates that Tehran is able to manage specific exemptions for maritime traffic while broader transit remains restricted.
At the same time, Baghdad is working to diversify its oil export routes through Türkiye’s Ceyhan port, with plans to increase reliance on Syria’s Baniyas port and Jordan’s Aqaba port in order to reduce its exposure to risks surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Bottom line:
What has taken place is a limited exemption for Iraqi tankers, not a comprehensive reopening of the strait. At the same time, it highlights the importance of diplomatic channels between Baghdad and Tehran in protecting Iraq’s oil interests amid the ongoing regional maritime and energy crisis.
