The Secretary-General of Harakat al-Nujaba, Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi, today published a video showing himself stepping on and walking over the American flag, captioning it:

#YourCrimesUnderOurFeet

The move came in response to the detention by Iraqi authorities, according to local media, of a citizen named Dhargham Abu Rughaif, after he participated in an event during which the American and Israeli flags were trampled.

Politically, the message goes beyond a symbolic act. Al-Kaabi is attempting to frame the issue within the broader debate over Iraqi sovereignty and the limits of American influence inside state institutions — one of the most sensitive issues in the relationship between Baghdad and resistance factions affiliated with, or connected to, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

The statement also comes amid growing tensions over the future of U.S. influence in Iraq, the role of the PMF, and the boundaries of what some Iraqi political forces consider foreign interference in the country’s internal security and political decisions.

The message al-Kaabi intended to send is clear: arresting someone over a symbolic act against the United States and Israel will not pass without a political and media response from forces opposed to American influence in Iraq.

The bigger question remains: will the government treat the incident as a limited legal matter, or will it develop into a broader political confrontation with PMF forces and factions opposed to the American influence ?
