Iraqi Chief Justice Arrives in Damascus on First Official Visit to Discuss Prison Files and...

Damascus

Following up on previously reported arrangements, Iraq’s Chief Justice, Judge Faiq Zidan, arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, heading a high-level judicial delegation. It is the first official visit of its kind by an Iraqi official of this rank since the major recent transformations in Syria.

The Iraqi delegation began its visit with an official meeting with Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar Abdulrahman Al-Wais, to discuss a number of sensitive and highly complex areas of mutual concern, foremost among them the issue of detainees affiliated with the terrorist ISIS organization, prison-related matters, and joint judicial and legal coordination.

The move comes at a particularly sensitive regional moment, coinciding with rapidly developing judicial and political dynamics across the region, as prison and detention issues increasingly intersect with broader regional settlements and political arrangements.

Side Note

In the video above, the current Syrian Justice Minister, Mazhar Al-Wais, appears in footage of a field execution in Syria in 2015, during his time working within the judiciary affiliated with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
