Iraqi Parliament Speaker Sparks Controversy with Edited “Arabian Gulf” Map

Baghdad

In what critics describe as another example of the childish conduct of some Iraqi officials, and coinciding with the visit of the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament to Iraq, the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives published an image featuring a map labeled “Arabian Gulf”—a move that triggered questions over its timing and political implications.

A Political Reading of the Tweet

• Sensitive timing: The controversy erupted immediately following a high-profile official visit by the Iranian side, opening the door to competing interpretations over the implicit messages some parties may be attempting to convey.

• Lack of diplomatic experience: According to critics, the performance reflects the lack of political and diplomatic experience among some officials who have assumed senior positions in the state, particularly when it comes to managing crises and national interests with political prudence.

• Distracting the public from core issues: Critics argue that such moves do not serve Iraq’s interests, but instead divert public attention from the country’s real challenges and the urgent services-related problems facing citizens.

• The most important question amid the controversy: Why is the image itself photoshopped? This raises concerns about the superficiality of some aspects of official media messaging and the use of blatant visual manipulation to register short-term political positions.

The Speaker—and indeed all officials who, unfortunately, have assumed senior positions of government without even basic political experience—would have been better served by responding to violations and encroachments by neighboring states, particularly efforts by certain parties to block every Iraqi maritime outlet.
