Israel Claims Responsibility for Killing the Martyr Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared on 6 July 2026, during the funeral procession of former Iranian Supreme Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenaei, that

“Israel assassinated Ali Khamenaei”

and warned that

“any future Iranian leader planning Israel’s destruction will also be eliminated.”

The remarks came months after Khamenei was reportedly killed in the 28 February 2026 joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike that triggered the regional war.

From an Axis of Resistance perspective, Katz’s remarks amount to an explicit endorsement of state assassination as official doctrine, raising serious questions under international law and the UN Charter.

If targeted killings of foreign heads of state become normalized, what prevents other states from adopting the same logic?

Does Israel believe military superiority places it above the legal norms it invokes against its adversaries?

And what precedent does this set for an already volatile Middle East?
