Iraq

it’s Not the Strait of Hormuz: Iraqi Mp Hayam al-yasiri Reveals oil–transport Ministry Conflict and...

Baghdad

Iraqi MP Hayam Al-Yasiri revealed, following the Transport Minister’s appearance before the Parliamentary Transport, Communications and Governance Committee, allegations of corruption surrounding Iraq’s maritime transport crisis, stressing that the problem is not related to the Strait of Hormuz as some have claimed.

According to Al-Yasiri, the core of the crisis lies in a hidden conflict between the Ministry of Oil and the Ministry of Transport, with the Oil Ministry — specifically the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO) — refusing to transport Iraqi oil using Iraq’s state-owned maritime tankers.

This raises serious questions about why the national maritime fleet is being kept idle and who benefits from preventing Iraqi tankers from participating in the transportation of the country’s own oil.

If Iraq has its own tankers, why aren’t they being used?

Is the maritime transport crisis really a geopolitical problem — or is part of it the result of an institutional struggle and alleged corruption inside Iraq itself?
