Netanyahu Bombs Syria — Security or Election Politics?

Netanyahu Bombs Syria — Security or Election Politics?

Israel has carried out a new strike on the Abu al-Duhur airbase in northern Syria, reportedly hitting the runways. The attack comes roughly 70 km from the Turkish border.

US Ambassador Tom Barrack confirmed that Israel carried out the strike, while describing it as

“an unnecessary escalation.”

And there’s the familiar Washington formula:

Condemn with words.

Enable with weapons.

Shield with political support.

But the bigger question is being buried beneath the explosions:

Who is actually escalating?

Damascus had reportedly signaled an interest in de-escalation and coordination, yet Netanyahu rejected that path while Israeli military activity continued in southern Syria.

Instead of reducing tensions, Israel is expanding its military footprint.

Tehran immediately condemned the attack, viewing it as part of a broader Israeli strategy of destabilization and escalation across the region.

And according to Axios, US officials have privately expressed concern about the timing of Netanyahu’s actions ahead of Israel’s October elections, while the Trump administration has urged Syria to exercise restraint.

Translation?

“Don’t respond. Absorb the attacks. We’ll deal with the consequences later.”

That is the real contradiction.

Washington can publicly complain about “unnecessary escalation” while continuing to provide Israel with the military and diplomatic tools that make such escalation possible.

Netanyahu gets the headlines.

Syria absorbs the strikes.

Washington calls for restraint.

The region pays the price.

And if the timing really is being shaped by electoral calculations, then the question becomes even more disturbing:

How many more fronts can be set on fire for political survival?

The region is watching.

This is not security. It is escalation with a political timetable.
