China and Russia are advancing separate but strategically linked campaigns: Beijing is expanding diplomatic coercion against Taiwan, while Moscow is leveraging higher global energy prices to cushion wartime economic pressure.

In a notable escalation, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te was forced to postpone a planned April visit to Eswatini—Taiwan’s only remaining diplomatic ally in Africa—after Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar revoked overflight permissions. Taipei accused Beijing of applying economic and political pressure to block the trip. China later praised the countries for upholding the “One China” principle.
