Parallel Pressure: China Tightens Taiwan Isolation as Russia Converts Oil Shock into War Financing

Parallel Pressure: China Tightens Taiwan Isolation as Russia Converts Oil Shock into War Financing

China and Russia are advancing separate but strategically linked campaigns: Beijing is expanding diplomatic coercion against Taiwan, while Moscow is leveraging higher global energy prices to cushion wartime economic pressure.

In a notable escalation, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te was forced to postpone a planned April visit to Eswatini—Taiwan’s only remaining diplomatic ally in Africa—after Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar revoked overflight permissions. Taipei accused Beijing of applying economic and political pressure to block the trip. China later praised the countries for upholding the “One China” principle. The U.S. State Department criticized the move, calling it coercive behavior and a misuse of international aviation norms.

At the same time, Russia is benefiting from a sharp oil rally tied to instability in the Gulf and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude briefly climbed above $107 per barrel, while Russia’s central bank raised its annual oil price forecast by 45% to $65/barrel, giving Moscow additional fiscal space despite recessionary pressure and war costs.

However, battlefield conditions remain difficult for Moscow. Ukrainian military sources say Kyiv has regained much of the contested ground in Dnipropetrovsk region, with over 400 km² reportedly recaptured in recent operations. Russian drone and missile attacks on Dnipro continue, killing civilians this week.

Context

China has steadily reduced Taiwan’s formal diplomatic partners from more than 20 to around a dozen through sustained economic pressure and inducements. Africa has become a key arena due to Chinese lending, trade, and infrastructure influence.

Russia, meanwhile, has repeatedly relied on energy shocks to stabilize state revenue during sanctions. Since 2022, oil and gas exports have remained central to financing military operations in Ukraine.

Latest Developments

Washington publicly condemned China’s role in blocking Lai’s travel route. EU institutions advanced a €90 billion support framework for Ukraine this week. Russia launched over 150 drones in recent strikes, according to battlefield monitoring reports.

Geopolitical Analysis

This development matters because it shows how major powers are using non-military leverage to pursue strategic goals.

China is testing a new model of Taiwan containment: not direct confrontation, but limiting mobility, legitimacy, and diplomatic visibility. If successful, it could normalize third-country compliance with Beijing’s red lines.

Russia’s oil windfall demonstrates the vulnerability of sanctions regimes to commodity shocks. Higher prices can offset lower export volumes, prolonging Moscow’s capacity to sustain war.

Together, these moves suggest an international system where coercion increasingly operates through airspace access, shipping lanes, finance, and commodity markets rather than conventional escalation alone.

Axis of Resistance Perspective

Actors aligned with the Axis of Resistance are likely to view these developments as evidence that Western influence is under strain. Iran benefits indirectly from higher oil prices and maritime leverage. Hezbollah and Iraqi factions may interpret U.S. focus on Europe and East Asia as strategic overstretch. China’s challenge to U.S.-backed Taiwan diplomacy also fits a broader anti-unipolar narrative.
