Patriot Leaves First… This Is How U.S. Guarantees End in Iraq

Al-Monitor: The United States has begun withdrawing its remaining forces from Iraq ahead of the September 30 deadline, alongside the withdrawal of Patriot air defense systems from Erbil. Sources said the move was driven by limited Patriot missile stockpiles and the redeployment of these systems toward the Gulf region and Jordan, despite continued Iranian and militia attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region. The decision has raised concerns over a weakening of the U.S. defensive umbrella over the region.

This is what U.S. guarantees look like when they collide with Washington’s priorities.

In 2014, while Iraq was facing one of its most dangerous battles against ISIS, U.S. contractors responsible for supporting and maintaining Abrams tanks left for Dubai, citing the deteriorating security situation, after ammunition and equipment related to their operations had been withdrawn. They left Iraq to face its fate despite the existence of dozens of military contracts and the Strategic Framework Agreement with the United States.

Today, the same pattern is repeating in a different form: Patriot systems are being withdrawn from Iraq, priorities are being shifted elsewhere, and Iraqi airspace is becoming increasingly exposed—sending a message that U.S. interests ultimately take precedence over any commitment or agreement.
