Right Vs. Power: the Rise and Fall of iran’s First National Oil Government

#️⃣ Part Two | the Diplomatic Trap & the Fracturing of the National Front

After Iran nationalized its oil industry, the battle moved from the oil fields to the diplomatic arena.

Washington entered the crisis presenting itself as a mediator and opponent of old-style British colonialism. But behind closed doors, its objective was to ensure that Western control over Iran’s oil industry survived—this time through a broader international consortium that could bring major American oil companies into Iran.

The proposals presented through Averell Harriman, and later through international mediation and the World Bank, appeared to offer compromise. But Tehran increasingly saw them as an attempt to replace Britain’s monopoly with a new Western-controlled arrangement.

Mosaddegh refused.

And this was the turning point.

The supposed mediator increasingly revealed itself as a stakeholder seeking its own share of Iran’s oil.

When diplomacy failed to force Mosaddegh into submission, Washington and London moved closer toward a more direct strategy.

The Internal Front Begins to Crack

Meanwhile, Britain’s blockade had devastated Iran’s oil revenues, creating a severe economic crisis.

Mosaddegh struggled to develop a sustainable oil-free economic model or mechanisms capable of circumventing the blockade and relying on domestic capacity.

But the greatest vulnerability was political.

The powerful alliance between Mosaddegh and Ayatollah Kashani, which had helped mobilize the country in July 1952, gradually fractured over political disagreements, the distribution of governmental authority, religious demands, and growing fears over the influence of the communist Tudeh Party.

The united front that had once defeated the Shah and army was no longer united.

The Great Powers: Rivals in Public, Interests in Common

The Cold War powers appeared to be ideological enemies—but when it came to Iran’s oil and strategic position, their interests produced a striking convergence.

The United States, frustrated by Mosaddegh’s refusal to compromise, moved toward cooperation with Britain to remove the national government.

The Soviet Union, meanwhile, had little interest in confronting the West to defend a non-communist nationalist government. The Tudeh Party was consequently instructed to maintain restraint and political neutrality.

Despite possessing an organized political and military structure, the party did not intervene decisively.

The lesson of Part Two:

A government can survive external pressure only if it can simultaneously withstand economic warfare, diplomatic manipulation, and internal fragmentation.

Once the national front fractured, the external powers no longer needed to defeat a united Iran.

They only needed to exploit its divisions.
