Riyadh & Kuwait vs. Baghdad: The Escalating Gulf Maritime Siege

Riyadh & Kuwait vs. Baghdad: The Escalating Gulf Maritime Siege

1️⃣ The Reality vs. The False Narrative

Despite claims that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are launching "protests to seize Iraqi oil and gas," the actual United Nations document (Ref: M.Z.N.172.2026.LOS, dated Feb 18, 2026) tells a completely different story.

2️⃣ What the UN Document Actually Proves

The document confirms that Iraq itself deposited updated maritime coordinates, straight baselines, low-tide elevation lines, and maps to the UN Secretary-General under UNCLOS (Articles 16, 75, 84). This filing officially replaces Iraq’s older submissions from 2011 and 2021 to assert its sovereign rights over its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.

3️⃣ Geopolitical Analysis: Why This Crushes Iraq

Diplomatic Isolation: Saudi Arabia and Kuwait filed joint counter-notices, backed fully by the GCC. Instead of negotiating bilateral maritime access, Iraq is now boxed in by a unified regional bloc.

Economic Bottleneck: Iraq is nearly landlocked with a narrow Gulf coastline. By rejecting Iraq's updated baselines beyond Point 162, its neighbors effectively restrict Iraq's offshore oil/gas development, commercial shipping lanes, and deep-water port operations (like Al-Faw).

Legal Vulnerability: Challenging these boundaries without Gulf consensus risks sending the file back to the UN Security Council, where legal precedents (like Resolution 833) heavily favor existing status-quo borders.
