🔴The West Bank and the End of the Palestinian Cause: A Critical Geopolitical Analysis of the Future of Palestinian National Liberation Introduction

The Palestinian cause faces its most dangerous challenges in 2025 since the Nakba of 1948. After more than 15 months of devastating war on Gaza, which has resulted in the martyrdom of over 63, 746 Palestinians according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the world is witnessing an organized attempt to end the Palestinian cause in plain sight of the international community. This analysis sheds light on the different roles played by regional and international powers in liquidating the Palestinian cause, and the future of the Palestinian Authority under these dangerous developments.

The Current State of the Palestinian Authority: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

The Crisis of Legitimacy and Effectiveness

The Palestinian Authority faces a genuine existential crisis in 2025. According to a poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research between May 1-4, 2025, 42% of Palestinians support dissolving the Palestinian Authority, compared to 49% seven months earlier. This decline in popular support reflects growing frustration with the Authority’s inability to protect the Palestinian people or achieve any tangible accomplishments.

The Jenin Operation: Exposing the Palestinian Authority’s Weakness

The Palestinian Authority’s operation in Jenin in January 2025, described by analysts as the “fiercest” internal Palestinian fighting since the 2007 Gaza battle, revealed fundamental contradictions in the Authority’s position. While it was trying to prove its ability to govern and suppress armed resistance to gain Israeli and American approval, the operation effectively failed when PA forces withdrew from their positions on January 21 as the Israeli army began a major raid on Jenin camp. According to a Washington Post report, the Palestinian Authority lost 6 of its personnel in this operation, with many others wounded, and Palestinian security leaders concluded that their forces failed to hit targets, engage in close-quarters battles, and dismantle improvised explosive devices. A Palestinian official noted that “our men have very basic experience and don’t have protective gear, and the situation for them was very hard.”

The American 🤍 - Israeli 🌟 Role in Liquidating the Palestinian Cause

The American Administration and Financial Pressure The United States continues to play a dual role in the Palestinian cause. While claiming to support the two-state solution, it exerts severe pressure on the Palestinian Authority. According to the International Crisis Group, the Trump administration suspended funding to the Palestinian Authority for 90 days, including security forces, without guaranteeing resumption of payments. This includes $80 million in security assistance, with no other donor country offering to fill this void. The American administration also imposed visa restrictions on President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation who wanted to attend the UN General Assembly, where France, Britain, Australia, Canada, and Belgium are scheduled to recognize Palestine in September 2025.
