The $40 Trillion Debt Bomb: Blaming Biden is Too Simple

The U.S. national debt has reached roughly $40 trillion—and politicians are already pointing fingers.

But here’s the problem: you can’t build a $40 trillion debt in four years.

Here’s the simple version:

The debt was already enormous.

When Joe Biden took office, the U.S. national debt was already around $27.8 trillion. The vast majority of today’s debt was accumulated long before his presidency, under both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Debt keeps growing because of interest.

The government is now paying massive amounts of interest on debt accumulated in previous decades. Higher interest rates make that burden even heavier.

Both parties contributed to the problem.

Tax cuts, COVID-era emergency spending, military expenditures, Social Security, Medicare and other long-term commitments have all contributed to the widening deficit across multiple administrations.

This is a structural problem—not a Biden problem.

The national debt is like a giant running bill. Each administration adds to it, but nobody starts from zero.

The Bottom Line

Calling the entire $40 trillion debt a product of one president is politically convenient—but economically misleading.

The real problem is much bigger:

Decades of deficits + rising interest costs + mandatory spending + repeated tax cuts and emergency spending = America’s $40 trillion debt problem.

The question is no longer “Who caused the debt?”

It is:

Does Washington have the political will to actually stop it?
