The Contradictory Shift: Arab Presidents’ Cowardly Silence vs

The Contradictory Shift: Arab Presidents’ Cowardly Silence vs

On August 28, 2025, Ahmed Ghaleb al-Rahawi, Prime Minister of Yemen’s Houthi government, along with several of his ministers, was assassinated in an Israeli airstrike on Sana’a during an official meeting [(en.wikipedia.org,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_al-Rahawi?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [reuters.com,](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/prime-minister-yemens-houthi-government-killed-israeli-strike-2025-08-30/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [washingtonpost.com).](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/08/30/houthi-leader-ahmad-al-rahawi-killed/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) The attack was a blatant act of aggression and a violation of Arab sovereignty.

What stood out, however, was the shameful silence of Arab leaders. Not a single head of state dared to call him by name or condemn his killing as a crime. Instead, these same leaders rushed to welcome Ahmad al-Shar’a (Abu Mohammed al-Golani)—a man they all previously recognized as a terrorist—as Syria’s new head of state. The hypocrisy could not be more glaring: ignoring Israeli crimes against an Arab prime minister while embracing a former al-Qaeda commander as legitimate.

Who Is Abu Mohammed al-Golani? From Terror to Legitimacy

Ahmad al-Shar’a, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, is a notorious jihadist, founder of Jabhat al-Nusra—al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch [(en.wikipedia.org,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_al-Sharaa?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [reuters.com).](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/syrian-leader-sharaas-path-global-jihad-trump-meeting-2025-05-14/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) 👌 Creation of Jabhat al-Nusra: After the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011, Golani was dispatched by al-Qaeda leadership from Iraq to Syria to establish Jabhat al-Nusra. By January 2012, he was the group’s emir [(en.wikipedia.org).](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_al-Sharaa?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

International Terrorist Label: In 2013, the U.S. officially designated him a global terrorist, calling Jabhat al-Nusra nothing more than an al-Qaeda offshoot [(en.wikipedia.org).](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_al-Sharaa?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

👌 Splinter and Image Shift: In 2016, Golani announced a break with al-Qaeda and rebranded his group as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), attempting to shed the “global jihadist” image for a “local revolutionary” one [(apnews.com,](https://apnews.com/article/aab4c8894238904a4e351076726499fb?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [reuters.com,](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/abu-mohammed-al-golani-former-al-qaeda-chief-who-is-syrias-leading-rebel-2024-12-05/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [ft.com).](https://www.ft.com/content/8aa819a3-2fc7-4790-be00-b42f21ed1c4e?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

From Terrorist to President: By December 2024, Golani had seized control of Damascus and declared himself head of state. In May 2025, he even met with former U.S. President Donald Trump—a shocking display of normalization with a man whose name once topped terror lists [(reuters.com,](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/syrian-leader-sharaas-path-global-jihad-trump-meeting-2025-05-14/?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [ft.com,](https://www.ft.com/content/8aa819a3-2fc7-4790-be00-b42f21ed1c4e?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [apnews.com).](https://apnews.com/article/aab4c8894238904a4e351076726499fb?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

Despite this record, Arab leaders hastily congratulated Golani’s rise while cowardly avoiding even minimal condemnation of Israel’s assassination of Yemen’s prime minister.

Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi’s Speech 👔 : Beyond Emotion, A Call for Action

In his speech following the assassination, Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of Ansar Allah, framed the event in explicitly political and religious terms: 👌 Martyrdom as Honor: He declared that sacrifices in the path of God are not losses but victories, and that martyrdom is a sacred station of true success [(presstv.ir,](https://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2025/07/21/751573/Yemen-Israel-Palestinians-starvation-Arab-Muslim?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [english.almayadeen.net,](https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/gaza-exposes-some-arab-nations--ties-to-the-west--sayyed-al?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [palestinechronicle.com).](https://www.palestinechronicle.com/ansarallah-leader-vows-unwavering-support-for-palestine-criticizes-arab-silence/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

Honor of Resistance: He insisted that walking the path of resistance is the only path to dignity and victory, in contrast with Arab leaders’ “submissive silence” before Israeli crimes.

👌 Condemnation of Arab Silence: Al-Houthi directly blamed Arab regimes for their cowardice, describing them as betting on “submission and passivity” in the face of “the crime of the century.”

Concrete Military Action: He underlined Yemen’s continued strikes against Israel—via missiles, drones, and naval blockades—while affirming steady support for the Palestinian cause [(english.almayadeen.net,](https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/gaza-exposes-some-arab-nations--ties-to-the-west--sayyed-al?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [arabnews.com,](https://www.arabnews.com/node/2429141/middle-east?utm_source=chatgpt.com) [presstv.ir).](https://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2025/07/21/751573/Yemen-Israel-Palestinians-starvation-Arab-Muslim?utm_source=chatgpt.com) While his speech was heavily ideological, it provided what Arab leaders lacked: a clear stance, political agency, and actual resistance.

Arab Leaders Chose Silence, and Legitimized Terror Instead

👌 Arab presidents who could not even condemn the assassination of a fellow Arab prime minister revealed the bankruptcy of their supposed “Arab unity.” ✌ Their haste to legitimize a man with a long history of bloodshed, al-Golani, shows that for them, terrorism can be washed away when politically convenient. 👌 Meanwhile, al-Houthi’s words—whether one agrees with his ideology or not—at least embody action, resistance, and political clarity. The regimes’ silence, by contrast, reflects cowardice and betrayal.
