The Illusion of “Total Control” — and washington’s Confusion in Confronting Iran

The Illusion of “Total Control” — and washington’s Confusion in Confronting Iran

Trump’s sudden decision to suspend negotiations with Iran, less than 24 hours after hinting that they could resume, exposes the dilemma at the heart of the

“maximum pressure”

strategy: Washington keeps raising the stakes, but has no clear exit strategy from the crisis.

Hormuz Exposes the American Narrative

Despite U.S. claims of

“full control”

over the Strait of Hormuz, the operational and maritime reality is far more complicated.

The strait, through which roughly 20–25% of global oil supplies pass, remains subject to major disruptions and security threats. Iran’s asymmetric capabilities have demonstrated that maritime control cannot be measured simply by the deployment of military vessels.

American Oil is No Magic Substitute

The idea that Gulf disruptions can be offset by increasing production in Texas, Alaska, and Louisiana overlooks a fundamental reality: U.S. light crude is technically different from the heavier Gulf crude that many global refineries are designed to process.

In other words, increasing U.S. production does not automatically mean that Washington can fill the gap created by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

From Diplomacy to Military Threats

U.S. Ambassador to the Israeli entity Mike Huckabee’s remarks about keeping the

“full-scale military option”

on the table appear increasingly like an attempt to compensate for diplomatic setbacks through threats.

Following the rounds of talks in Muscat and Islamabad, returning to the language of sanctions and threats is not necessarily a strategic shift. It can instead be interpreted as a sign that Washington has failed to impose its terms on Tehran.

Resistance Axis Perspective: Deterrence is Emptying “Maximum Pressure” of Its Content

The contradictions in Trump’s rapidly shifting statements reveal a state of strategic confusion more than confidence in the strength of the American position.

Meanwhile, dismissing the impact of drones as merely a

“minor nuisance”

ignores the fact that modern warfare is not measured solely by the immediate physical damage inflicted. It is also measured by its impact on energy markets, maritime insurance, investor confidence, and global risk calculations.

The question is no longer: Can Washington escalate?

The real question is:

How far can Washington escalate before pressure on Iran becomes pressure on the global economy itself?
