U.S. President Donald Trump warned his supporters that a Republican loss of the majority in the midterm congressional elections could pave the way for impeachment proceedings, urging his electoral base to treat the upcoming elections as if he were personally running in them.
During a campaign rally in South Carolina, Trump attacked the prospect of Democrats regaining control of Congress, warning that they would seek to dismantle his economic agenda and border policies, turning the remainder of his presidency into an open political confrontation.
The significance of the elections goes beyond the traditional partisan struggle:
Democratic control of the House could open the door to extensive investigations and political pressure on the administration.
