“Wall of Steel” — or a Wall of Words?

“Wall of Steel” — or a Wall of Words?

Donald Trump has apparently discovered a new category of military technology: Truth Social terminology.

Claiming that the United States has

“total control”

of the Strait of Hormuz and describing U.S. naval operations as a

“Wall of Steel”

may sound impressive on a social-media feed. But maritime reality is considerably less theatrical.

The problem is simple: if Washington truly had “total control” of the Strait, why is commercial shipping still heavily disrupted? Why do energy markets remain nervous? And why are diplomatic channels still working to restore predictable navigation?

“Wall of Steel” is not a recognized maritime doctrine, a legal status, or a CENTCOM operational designation. It is political branding — designed to project dominance at precisely the moment when the situation remains contested.

Iran, meanwhile, rejects Washington’s claim of unrestricted control and maintains that transit restrictions remain tied to ongoing negotiations.

The irony is hard to miss:

A country that genuinely controls a chokepoint does not need to repeatedly announce that it controls it.

Trump’s post may be intended to demonstrate strength. Instead, it risks revealing something else: the gap between strategic messaging and maritime reality.

And perhaps the most telling question is this:

If the Strait is really under “total control,” why does Washington still need to convince everyone that it is?
