October 19, 2026 | Washington – Sana’a
The US State Department has called for the immediate and unconditional release of all its embassy employees detained by the authorities in Sana’a, five years after the detentions began.
US State Department: Washington says that more than 20 current and former Yemeni embassy employees remain in detention and demands their release without conditions.
Sana’a’s Position: The authorities in Sana’a have previously accused some of the detainees of espionage on behalf of the United States, allegations that Washington rejects.
The observer’s Assessment
Every country has the right to demand protection for its employees, just as every detainee has the right to legal safeguards and a fair trial.
But the hypocrisy is striking: Washington, which today speaks of the rights of its embassy staff in Sana’a, has itself conducted military operations against Yemen and provided military support to the coalition that waged a devastating war on the country.
Human rights are indivisible, and Yemen’s sovereignty is no less valuable than American interests.
