19 October 2026 | Shabwa, Yemen
At least 53 people were killed and approximately 200 wounded after Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement launched an attack on a government security-force training camp in the southern province of Shabwa.
The casualties were reported by local authorities and confirmed as their official figures by Reuters and the Associated Press.
The attack: Local government sources told Reuters that three ballistic missiles struck the camp during a training exercise.
Casualties: Shabwa’s authorities warned that the preliminary death toll could rise.
Houthi acknowledgment: Ansar Allah acknowledged targeting the military installation.
Government reaction: Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi condemned the attack and promised a firm response.
Wider escalation: The confrontation follows renewed fighting between Ansar Allah and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces near territory connected to the Bab al-Mandab maritime corridor.
Why Shabwa matters ?
The province is home to the Balhaf liquefied natural gas facility, one of Yemen’s most important industrial assets. There is no verified indication that the facility itself was struck.
Military assessment: The attack demonstrates Ansar Allah’s continuing ability to inflict heavy casualties on opposing forces despite sustained military pressure.
The danger is a widening cycle of retaliation involving Yemen and Saudi Arabia, with potential consequences for energy infrastructure and Red Sea shipping.
