Yemeni Blockade Disrupts Asian Energy Supply: Saudi Oil Rerouted Around Africa

Yemeni Blockade Disrupts Asian Energy Supply: Saudi Oil Rerouted Around Africa

Asian refining companies are assessing options to reroute oil tankers loading from the Saudi port of Yanbu on the Red Sea through the Suez Canal and around the African continent to reach Asia. This comes in response to a naval blockade imposed by the Yemenis ("Ansar Allah") on Saudi ports, effectively shutting down the direct southern exit via the Bab al-Mandab Strait for eastbound shipments.

Geopolitical & Economic

Consequences:

Severe Supply Chain Delays: Adds up to four additional weeks of transit time for crude shipments delivering to Asian markets.

Sharp Cost Spikes: Triggers a steep surge in freight rates, war-risk insurance premiums, and tanker fuel consumption.

Failure of Saudi Diversion Strategy: Neutralizes Riyadh’s ability to utilize Yanbu as a safe alternative export hub bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

Suez Logistics Bottleneck: Forcing massive tankers northbound creates operational strains on both the Suez Canal and the SUMED pipeline, neither of which are configured to handle the full volume of eastbound Gulf exports.

— British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has approved the continued use of UK military bases by the U.S. for "defensive strikes" against Iran, maintaining the policy adopted under his predecessor, Keir Starmer, according to Bloomberg.
